POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS

Helpful Post-Operative Instructions

  • Immediately after surgery, bite on the gauze pad for one hour, keep swallowing and do not spit out. Change gauze every 1/2 hour until bleeding stops
  • Bleeding or oozing is to be expected, especially for the first few hours. There will always be a small amount of blood on the gauze. If you are concerned, place gauze over the area and bite firmly for 1/2 hour
  • Do not rinse for 24 hours after surgery, then rinse your mouth with 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a full glass of warm water. If bleeding occurs do not rinse
  • Swelling after surgery is normal and peaks at 48 hours. Apply ice to the face 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off in the first 24 hours
  • Pain - Take the prescribed medicine as directed as soon as possible after surgery. It often will take a while for it to work. Do not wait too long after surgery to take your medicine
  • Food - Soft food and sweet drinks (soda or juices) are best following surgery. Nausea after a general Anesthetic occurs sometimes; the best treatment for nausea is sleep
  • Smoking is not recommended at any time, but particularly during the healing period since this may compromise healing
  • Activity- Avoid strenuous and athletic activity in the first 24 hours after surgery as this can lead to increased bleeding and pain. Do not drive for eight hours following general anesthesia or taking Narcotic pain medicine
  • Discoloration of the skin may appear following surgery. This is normal and will resolve within several days
  • Call the office if any unusual disturbances develop
